Are you planning on taking a Sping Break vacation?

Before leaving your home for more than few days take the time and go for a walk around the house and check for any water damage or potential damage.

When you spent time on vacation, water could be leaking in your house for days and can ruin your flooring, subfloor, furniture, walls, insulation, wiring and more. The damage can become critical to your home if you not follow the necessary maintenance for the home. To get started, closely inspect your entire roof for any penetration and damage:

  • Check that there are no missing, damaged or worn out shingles on your roof;
  • Check around the chimney, vents, skylights, flashing, satellite dishes…
  • Look inside the attic carefully for leaks…
  • Clear all the debris out of your roof and gutters;
  • Check the downspouts for any blockages;
  • Trim tree branches because dead or rotting branches can slam on your roof, siding and windows.

However, we do not recommend you to climb up on your roof. Records indicate in 2011, 65,000 people died in the USA by falling off of ladders. Give us a call and ask about our 17-point roof inspection and we can examine your roof in and out, and you can return from vacation to a home free of water damage.

So it’s up to you to get your roof in shape before vacation!

Summer Heat and Your Attic

Man is it hot out there! I don’t know about the rest of you, but Indiana had a day straight out of Dante’s Inferno. 95 degrees, 100% humidity. Ugh! In heat like this, you gotta be sure to check your attic and ventilation systems, otherwise you could be paying big time.

For an everyday Average Joe, the attic is simply the place to store boxes, luggage, old pictures, and occasionally all the ties from his kids he hopes to hide. But the modern day energy discussions, attics have become quite a hot topic. While there are a few antagonistic voices in the crowd, most researchers hold that a well-ventilated attic maintains more comfortable temperatures in both the winter cold and summer heat.

Specifically in summer, the sun’s constant beating down on the roof leads to extremely high attic temperatures, sometimes up to 150F! However, if the attic is ventilated correctly, hot air will escape through high vents creating a vacuum that sucks cool air in through the low vents. This constant circulation eliminates dead space that usually causes abnormally high attic temperatures.

If your attic is not properly ventilated it can cause mold and mildew buildup from all the moist, stagnant air unable to escape.  Thus, while installing vents to circulate air is a rather inexpensive process, repairing or replacing damaged and rotten roofing and sub-roofing is not. Not to mention, rotten wood in a moist atmosphere is a prime environment for pests like carpenter ants and termites. That is why you should call a local roofer to inspect your attic for a properly installed ventilation system before much bigger problems arise.

Don’t let an easily fixed and low-cost repair turn into a massive and costly restoration.

Stay Safe This Fourth of July

Seeing that Independence Day weekend is upon us, it’s time to call for safety. Fireworks cause thousands of personal injuries each year, almost half of which are to children under the age of 15! Even scarier, the national percentage of house fires caused by fireworks peaks up to 60% at the beginning of July! Please use caution when enjoying your own personal display this weekend, or simply enjoy the local professional ones from a safe distance.

If you are going to have your own display, please read the following list of safety tips from the Indiana State Fire Marshal:

Never let children handle, play with, or light any fireworks.

Store fireworks in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Always purchase your fireworks from reliable, licensed fireworks dealers.

Use a clear, open area and keep your audience a safe distance from the shooting site.

Do not alter any fireworks device or attempt to make your own fireworks.

Only light one firework item at a time and never attempt to re-light or fix a “dud” firework.

Have a fire extinguisher, water supply, hose, or bucket of water nearby.

Be cautious when lighting fireworks when it is windy.

Never smoke while handling fireworks.

Never aim, point, or throw fireworks at another person.

Again, Thomas Jefferson Roofing and Remodeling wants to wish everyone a happy and, more importantly, a safe holiday weekend.

RAINDROP GUTTER GUARD SYSTEM

Search Google.com for “Gutter Guards” and you’ll find hundreds of thousands of associated hits offering hundreds of products.  RAINDROP has earned the TOP 5 Product of the Year Award for a good reason: IT WORKS!

From RaindropGutterGuard.com:

“Allowing the gutters to do their job and flushing fine sized micro debris, is far better than trying to stop everything, which has a trade off of creating a cleaning maintenance issue, and now you are back cleaning your guards instead of your gutters (what is the point of that). OUR DESIGN WORKS BETTER.”

Gutter_guards

Vertical bars with a rounded top allow Raindrop to use the entire width of the gutter to maximize water capacity.  This design works with water’s natural chemistry in that it uses water falling through the cracks to suction more water down through the guard. This means that the harder it rains, the better Raindrop Gutter Guards perform.

Gutter_guards_3

Raindrop’s design was not intended to stop everything from entering the gutter. Doing so would open up the potential for mold and blockage. Instead, given proper installation, the guards will allow smaller roof granules and debris to pass through and flush out, while filtering off larger particles.

Gutter_guards_5
Gutter_guards_4

Lastly, the classic charcoal color makes them practically invisible from the ground!

Gutter_guards_2

Raindrop Gutter Guards are a remarkable product that out performs the rest of the competition.  Save yourself the hassle of constantly having to clean your gutters, and protect yourself from hazardous gutter buildup by having Raindrop Gutter Guards professionally installed today.

Chimney_cap_ad

Put Your Cap on the Right Way!

Did you know that if your chimney cap is damaged (or worse if you don’t even have one) it can cause major problems for your home? A properly installed and functioning chimney cap works like a protective umbrella for your chimney.

First, it keeps out wild animals like raccoons, squirrels, and birds which can turn your fireplace into a house for themselves.  They smell bad, they bring fleas, lice, and rabies into your home, they will damage your floors and furniture, and they can even give birth and raise their young in your living room. Do you really want three baby raccoons running around the house? Even worse, when the offspring grow up, they will return to your chimney to start making their own home. It never ends!

Second, it prevents rain from falling into the chimney and getting into your house.  The water will cause mold and mildew and can mix with the soot in your fireplace and run into your home, staining everything it touches a disgusting shade of black.

Lastly, it keeps burning embers from escaping the chimney and setting fire to trees and houses.  A chimney cap in working order will save your house and your neighbors’ houses from catastrophe.

Call Thomas Jefferson Roofing and Remodeling to inspect your current chimney cap or to install a new one.  We will make sure it is a perfect fit for your chimney, eliminating potential for any of these problems to occur.

Don’t let something as simple as a missing or damaged chimney cap to cause thousands of dollars of damage to your home!

Ripoff Roofers

It’s hard to believe I know, but there are “roofers” out there who like to scam people out of their money. Whether they take the down payment and run or damage the house themselves and then sell repairs, they are not the professionals you want working on your roof.

What to be wary of:

·         Door to door roofers offering special deals after a storm

·         Roofers without workers’ compensation, liability insurance, or certification

·         An abnormally low price

·         Roofers who ask for more than 50% upfront

What to do:

·         Do research. Angie’s list, Better Business Bureau, etc.

·         Understand your own insurance

·         Check for proper paperwork (insurance, certification, etc.)

·         Get at least three written estimates with price, materials, and timeline

·         Make the contract as detailed as possible

·         Be assured of a post-job inspection

Many horror stories include a roofer offering a great deal if they sign now who starts tearing down the roof, gets his down payment, and skips town leaving an exposed roof and a trashed yard.

Sometimes roofers will even cause damage themselves upon signing an agreement with the homeowner so that the insurance company has to pay for repairs. (This is insurance fraud by the way and it’s a federal crime.)

Again, be careful who you open the door to after a big storm rolls into town.  Be smart. Be patient. Don’t get fooled by phonies trying to take advantage of people who need help.

Lightning: Take 2

As if I haven’t already said enough about lightning, here are some more facts I just learned:

·         In 1963, an airliner over Maryland was struck by lightning and all 82 passengers were killed.

·         The downward bolt of lightning strikes with a measly 990 miles per second.

·         The upward does so at a whopping 85,000 miles per second!

·         The average bolt of lightning contains about 3 million volts per meter. (To put that in perspective, the average American power outlet has 120 volts)

·         Lightning can also come in a spherical form called lightning balls which are a rare but incredible sight.

From:

What on Earth: Lightning by Brian Williams

And Lightning, Hurricanes, and Blizzards by Paul Fleisher

Library Books. Proving that there are still a lot of cool things to be learned that aren’t on the internet… yet

.

Lookout for Lightning

We all enjoy occasionally sitting at the window and staring up at the sky during a thunderstorm, watching lightning light up the night as it streaks across the sky in a majestic flash. A beautiful scene, yes, but strictly speaking, this is extremely unsafe.  Lightning is much more dangerous than the average person believes it is.

Lightning is the second-most fatal type of severe weather killing more people than earthquakes, tornadoes, and hurricanes.  The danger, though, is hidden because these natural disasters are usually huge, public events while lightning causes small, private tragedies.

Many countries do not keep records on fatalities and injuries caused by lightning; however, statistician Ronald L. Holle has mathematically estimated that each year about 24,000 people are killed and 240,000 injuries occur worldwide.

While these rates are much lower when restricted to more developed countries, lightning still has a serious effect on the United States. $5 Billion in damages, 300 personal injuries, and 60 deaths occur each year due to lightning.

Fortunately, due to greater meteorological awareness and more substantial buildings, fatalities have been declining since the fifties and likewise have injuries and monetary damages, but even then, we must continue to protect ourselves.  The Indiana Department of Homeland Security’s website offers some tips on staying safe.

Before any outdoor activity, check local weather listings for rain or thunderstorms. If you see lightning, employ the “30-30 Rule”. If the time between the lightning strike and the sound of thunder is less than 30 seconds, find a safe location and wait for 30 minutes after the storm has dissipated or moved on. Avoid water, high ground, large open areas, metal objects, doors, windows, and the use of electronic appliances.  A safe place to shelter yourself is a “fully enclosed, substantially constructed building”. If none are available, an enclosed vehicle with a solid roof can suffice.

You can also protect your home or business from being struck by installing lightning rods (a service we provide) which will direct electrons along a safe path between the ground and the sky. Circle K down the street learned the hard way a few days ago. They were struck and now their computers are fried and customers can only pay in cash.  They have lost a lot of business this week because of it.

Become an educated citizen, learn about lightning, and protect you and your family from tragedy.

Tax Credit for Energy-Efficient Renovations

Did you know that if you make some energy efficient renovations to your home, you can get tax credit from the US Government? Well it’s true. According to EnergyStar.gov, President Barack Obama signed a law that will grant US Citizens the ability to claim tax credit on the purchase of energy-efficient roofing, insulation, doors, windows, and skylights for your home.

These two government-sponsored links should give you all the information you will need.

http://www.energysavers.gov/financial/70010.html

http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?c=tax_credits.tx_index

But if you don’t want to read it all, here’s the shortened version.

Roofing:  ENERGY STAR qualified asphalt and metal roofs reflect more of the sun’s rays than traditional roofs, thus decreasing the amount of heat your roof absorbs and the amount of energy your air conditioning expends trying to keep your house cool.  Not only will you save money on your energy bill, but you can also receive 10% of the cost of roofing (up to $500) in tax credit.

GAF’s line of energy-efficient roofing: http://www.gaf.com/Roofing/Residential/Products/Shingles/Timberline/Timberline-Cool-Series/Timberline-Cool-Series-Shingles.aspx

Insulation: You can also get 10% of the cost (up to $500) in tax credit for ENERGY STAR approved insulation or air seal.  These work to keep cold air in during the summer and hot air in during the winter. Again you’ll save money on your energy bills and get money from the government for doing so.

Doors, Windows, and Skylights: Properly insulated doors can get 10% credit up to $500 and windows and skylights up to $200. These renovations seal up the tiniest of gaps in your home which cause your heating and cooling systems to work harder than they should.  Furthermore, you don’t have to replace every one of your windows, doors, and skylights, and you can get credit by installing a window where you don’t have one now (a room addition for example).

Why not do this before time is up? These benefits are only for 2011.

Save money. Save energy. Save the World.

Watch Out for the Monster Under Your Roof

While as a kid you might have feared the monster under the bed, as a homeowner you need to be aware of the monster under your roof.  It’s the Money Monster, and it lives in your attic, attacks your roof, and eats your money!

This creature though is actually in the form of improper attic ventilation, and it terrorizes more than 90% of homes in North America.  The summer heat means that your attic needs constant air flow to remain cool.  Without proper ventilation, however, your roof and attic become extremely hot and leak this heat into your home.  This means your air conditioner has to work extra hard and so will you so you can pay your energy bill.

Improper ventilation also causes problems with the roof itself.  If your roof is not properly ventilated, many shingle manufacturers’ warranties can become void.  The extreme heat from the attic combined with the rays from the Sun fries your shingles, and they split, crack, and no longer protect your home.  Not to mention, all the built up humidity can lead to mold and mildew which are hazardous to both your health and the structural integrity of the roof.

Save yourself from the Money Monster by calling Thomas Jefferson Roofing and Remodeling.  We offer a 17-Point TipTop Roof Inspection with a HAAG Certified Roof Inspector. We will be sure to take care of the monster in your attic and do so with Excellence.
